Jaffer Modern is pleased to present a group show titled ‘DIPAKA’ (SEASONS)
DIPAKA – (SEASONS), also known as Dipaka tsa ngwaga, translates to seasons of the year and serves as the inspiration for the group exhibition presented at JAFFER MODERN from August 5 to September 23, 2021. The exhibition is curated by Nomusa Musa Mtshali, who and features artists; Feni Chulumanco, Nobukho Nqaba, Abongile Sidzumo, King Debs, Nomusa Musa Mtshali, and Ziyanda Majozi .
Seasons define the daily rhythm of nature on our planet earth, they are a clockwork of the universe. With preparation and hard work, each season becomes fruitful. Climate zones are the very definition of seasons and without them, nature as we know it will cease to exist. Each season comes with consistency as well as change.
The Greatmore artists use this source of inspiration to tackle different topics and dynamics through their art-making. They present to us the kaleidoscope of narrative in various forms of art mediums. Ranging from calligraphy, photographs, paintings, installation and montages. These vibrant artists, who like the seasons, are unique and important to the art world.
Nqaba’s work reflects on personal memories of growing up in an informal settlement in Grabouw, Cape Town, and the complexities of migration and labor.
Feni’s work looks closely at South African politics, the power struggles and power imbalance in the South African economy.
As a multimedia artist, King Debs is accustomed to using different media ranging from 3D digital art, calligraphy, and animation.
Mtshali expresses gender fluidity in ways that remind the society of the tide of humanity that binds all gender expressions and sexuality.
Leather is often associated with luxury, wealth, and power. Through his process of restitching and weaving this precious material, Sidzumo is proposing that we start thinking about repurposed materials.
Majozi takes on the challenge of repurposed materials when she creates mosaics with natural and man-made stones, creating colorful sculptural paintings.
We welcome you to join us during our season of seed harvesting and drying. Your presence and support will be much appreciated. We are assured that as time passes, you will be grateful you put your time and belief in the artists included in this exhibition.
